Bed sizes
The standard bed sizes in the United Kingdom are:
Small Single - 2' 6" by 6' 3" (75cm
by 190 cm)
Single - 3' 0" by 6' 3" (90cm by
190cm)
Small Double - 4' 0" by 6' 3" (120cm
by 190cm)
Double - 4' 6" by 6' 3" (135cm
by 190cm)
King size - 5' 0" by 6' 6" (150cm
by 200cm)
Super King size - 6' 0" x 6' 6"
(180cm by 200cm)
The standard UK bed sizes listed above refer to the mattress
size of the bed, which is the sleeping area. Bed frames come
in a variety of materials, including wood, metal, leather
and fabric and will have a greater width and longer length
than the sleeping area/mattress size. This is due to the construction
of the beds in a variety of forms, and the dimensions of the
beds themselves are included in the product descriptions.
However, Divan beds have the same width and length as the
mattress size/sleeping area. The sizes that are quoted with
the products are an approximation - the nature of manufacturing
mattresses allows for a 1.5" or 3.8 cm degree of tolerance
on all mattresses.
Looking for a "queen size" bed? The term Queen Size is not
a term that is used in mattress manufacturing in the United
Kingdom, and refers to a variety of mattress sizes. A queen
size mattress is considered to be a size between a double
and a king, usually measuring 4'9" by 6'6" (145cm by 200cm).
However, in the United States, a queen size mattress can be
as small as a "small double" or as large as 7' by 7'. If you
aren't sure about the size of mattress you want, please contact

Spring Systems |
|
| |
| |
There are several different types
of spring systems in mattresses that you can choose from, which
are as follows:
Open Coil Spring System
Open coil spring systems are made with inter-twined high tensile
steel that are turned into a complete frame of springs. These
are them linked together with a tight coil of steel that runs
either horizontally or vertically on the bed frame, which completes
an open coil spring system. When you look at open coil spring
systems, you will see "gauges" mentioned -
this gauge number refers to the thickness of the wire that is
used to make the springs. A 15 gauge open coil spring mattress
is quite soft, while a 12.5 gauge spring mattress is fairly
firm. Bonnell is a method that is used to make open coil spring
systems and is considered to be the best method for doing so.
There are other types of open coil spring systems that have
been created by mattress manufacturers, such as Sealy, who have
created the PostureTech system, the Airsprung mattress company
has the Supercoil, and the Silentnight mattress company has
the Miracoil.
Posture Spring System
The original spring system was designed by Slumberland and it
is called Posture Springing®. The Posture Springing®
is an interlinked system where the coils are made from one continuous
piece of wire. This enables all of the springs to work together
in unison. With this type of spring system, the springs work
together and the more weight that is applied, the more springs
that are used. Slumberland uses four Posture Springing®
sleep systems, the 700, 1100, 2000 and 2400. Sealy and Silentnight
mattress companies have come up with their own single-wire systems
- the Miracoil for Silentnight and the Posturetech/Posturepedic
for Sealy.
Pocket Sprung System
A pocket sprung mattress has springs made of high tensile steel
that are wrapped into separate pockets. There are two general
ways that pocket sprung systems are made, either by placing
the spring pockets into the mattress with a machine in rows,
to hand nesting, where the springs are placed by hand and secured
with a stitch by hand. These hand nested pocket sprung systems
are much more expensive because the process is quite labour
intensive.
Memory Foam Mattresses
If you are looking for more information on Memory Foam mattresses,
please see our memory foam guide.
Latex used in Mattresses
Latex is a product that is made from natural rubber that's
been tapped from a rubber tree. Latex in raw, liquid form is
converted to block latex which is used to construct mattresses.
There are two processes that convert rubber to latex: the Talalay
process and the Dunlop process.
For the construction of mattresses, the best latex to use is
100% natural latex; however, in some cases synthetic latex is
used.
Natural latex is non-toxic, dust mite resistant, anti-microbial
and hypoallergenic, which means that mattresses made with natural
latex are perfect for people who have allergies or asthma. Natural
latex mattresses are a healthy and clean sleeping environment.
In mattresses that use an open cell structure, there is a natural
ventilation system in the mattress, helping to increase the
healthy and clean sleeping environment. Natural latex also conforms
to the contours of your body and supports your spine evenly
and provides optimum support while you are sleeping, providing
a much better rest. |

What is a Divan
bed? |
|
| |
| |
A divan bed is a bed that consists
of only a mattress and a base - there is no headboard.
There are many divans to choose from, most of which are available
direct from stock. With many companies making divan beds, most
are manufactured in the United Kingdom for domestic use.
There are generally two types of bases for divan beds. The most
popular divan bed is a "sprung edge" base which has springs
in the base, offering an enhancement to all levels of mattress
comfort and support. There is also a platform top divan bed
base which has a solid lid that is sometimes padded. Platform
top divan beds make your mattress fee firmer and are usually
less expensive than sprung edge divans. For more information
on divan bed bases, please see the section on base types, below.

Firmness of Divan
Beds and Mattresses |
|
| |
| |
There are six grades of mattress
firmness, and the level of firmness provided by your divan will
affect the type of mattress you choose. If you choose a very
firm mattress, your divan will provide it to be even more firm.
The six grades of mattress firmness are:
• Soft
• Medium soft
• Medium
• Medium firm
• Firm – also known as orthopaedic
mattresses
• Extra firm – also known as orthopaedic
mattresses
Mattress firmness depends on a variety of factors including
the filling that is used, the construction and the spring type.
Each of the divan beds listed, state its firmness rating in
the description. |

Mattress Cover |
|
| |
| |
Many people don't realize the
importance of the mattress cover in how the mattress feels -
the covering on the mattress impacts the overall feeling of
your mattress, so it's important to know what type of
covering you are getting for your money and how it rates with
your mattress in mind. Jacquard mattress covering
Jacquard is a fabric that is woven on a loom. It creates elaborate
patterns on one side of the material. Jacquard is used in terms
of furnishing to refer to a type of loom that makes modern fabrics,
like Damask. Jacquard covers are ideal for mattress, upholstery,
curtains and furniture. Damask mattress covering
Damask is woven on a jacquard loom and is a soft, glossy fabric
that is reversible. The patterns on damask are often intricately
decorative. It is usually made of fibre blends such as linen,
and provides a durable finish. Micro-quilting
mattress covering
Micro-quilting is also sometimes known as panel quilting and
is a decorative stitch that holds the mattress filling in place
with a running stitch across the surface of the mattress. This
creates a flat sleeping surface which is perfect for people
who prefer an even and smooth feel to their mattress.
Hand tufting mattress covering
Hand tufting pins the mattress filling at specific points on
the mattress surface with a long stitch that runs from the surface
of the mattress to the core of the spring unit. These look like
buttons pressed into the surface and hand tufting creates a
wavy mattress surface. This type of covering is found on most
of the expensive pocket sprung mattresses. Storage
areas in your divan bed
Divan beds come with a variety of storage options. When you
need extra storage space, look for a divan bed with drawers
in the base. You have a choice of smooth running side or end
drawers on all of our divan bed bases. The drawer fronts on
the divan beds are upholstered with the same cloth that is used
for the mattress and the base, and are finished to be flush
with the base. This turns your "wasted space" into
storage, conveniently, quickly and easily. It's quite
important that you consider the layout of your bedroom when
you are ordering a divan bed with drawers. If you have limited
space at the side of your bed in your room, an end drawer may
be a better option for you. |

Base types |
|
| |
| |
Divan Beds
The base of your divan bed can greatly impact the support and
feel of your mattress. Be sure to choose the base that will
give you the overall mattress feeling and firmness that you
are looking for. Sprung Edge Divan Bases
- The sprung edge divan base provides the ultimate in
luxury for your bed. The springs on the base come right to the
edge to provide ultimate and complete support that is uniform
throughout the bed. The springs are built into the bed frame
that your mattress sits on, providing durability and support
for your mattress which will provide you with a luxurious sleeping
area.
Platform Top Divan Bases - The platform top for
divan beds is as its name implies - it is a solid platform
that is often padded. This type of base provides extra support
and firmness to your mattress, which is perfect if you like
an extra firm bed, or are looking for the ultimate orthopaedic
bed. Firm Edge Divan Bases -
These divan beds are a sprung base but the springs do not travel
to the edge. Instead, they are encased in wooden walls so that
the base edge is solid. Bedsteads
The bedstead bases that are offered also affect the way your
mattress will feel. Read on to find out which bedstead base
is best suited for you and your mattress choice.
Metal Mesh Bedstead Bases - The metal
mesh base is a great economy choice which is often used for
children's beds. It can withstand an abnormally high level
of rigorous treatment. Metal mesh bases are a metal wire base
that is interwoven and laid across the bed frame and is labelled
as very firm.
Slatted Bedstead Bases - This was the
most common base used on wooden beds, the slats usually made
with solid pine, to lie across the bed frame. In larger beds,
a wooden central spine runs the length of the bed, with two
sets of slats for each half of the bed. This type of base creates
a firm feel because there is no response to weight or pressure
on the solid wood.
Rod Bedstead Bases - The rod base is
similar to the slatted base, except that the slats are made
of metal instead of wood. This is the least common type of bedstead
base.
Sprung Slatted Bedstead Bases - This type of
base is quickly becoming the most often used form of base for
bed frames. Typically made from Beech wood, they are slightly
bowed with allows for more responsiveness to weight and pressure
than a solid slatted base. This type of base allows for a softer
mattress feel because of the springy effect of the Beech wood,
as well as helps to prolong the life of the mattress with the
springy effect, by taking the initial pressure off of the mattress. |
