Caring for and Maintaining your Sleigh Bed
Sleigh beds make a wonderful addition to any bedroom. Whether you have
an antique sleigh bed or a modern reproduction, its worth looking after
your piece of furniture and ensuring that it keeps its looks and value.
Position your bed carefully in your bedroom. Try to avoid placing wooden
furniture in prolonged exposure to bright sunlight, as this can bleach
the wood's finish and damage the surface. You may want to consider
protecting your furniture by keeping the blinds or curtains drawn when
necessary.
If you have a radiator or fireplace in your bedroom, try to avoid placing
your wooden sleigh bed too close. Too much humidity in your bedroom can
also damage the surface of wood - if possible keep the temperature
in your bedroom at between 65 to 70 degrees, and the relative humidity
at 35 to 40%.
Dust your sleigh bed at least once a week with a clean washable lint-free
cotton cloth. The cloth should be damp with polish or water - never
use a completely dry cloth as this can actually scratch a wooden surface.
Polish your bed every few weeks - just don't use a silicone
based polish, which can damage wood.
Small scratches can be removed from a wooden sleigh bed by rubbing gently
with steel wool soaked in polish. Deeper scratches can be repaired with
a furniture-patching wax stick, available at many DIY stores.
