Tempur - did you know?
Here are a few facts about the Tempur company and products that you
may not have been aware of.
Developed for the space programme
The Tempur material was originally developed for NASA by the Ames research
centre in California. Its purpose was to help astronauts cope with the
immense G-forces exerted on them during lift off.
A leap into healthcare
The first commercial uses for the Tempur material were in the healthcare
field; the aim was to relieve and prevent pressure sores, something which
the material is still used for today. Due to initial problems with large
scale production the scope for use of the material was limited; however,
after a decade of development by Swedish company Dan-Foam the material
can now be produced efficiently and on a large scale and has a variety
of uses in both domestic and healthcare felids.
Visco-elastic cells?
Tempur products are all composed of visco-elastic cells; these spherical
cells are both pressure and temperature sensitive, becoming warmer and
softer in areas where the most pressure is applied and cooler and firmer
in areas where less force is exerted.
Clinical studies and consumer surveys
Trials conducted on Tempur mattresses have demonstrated that they can
help reduce the amount of tossing and turning experience during the night
from an average approximately 100 times to just 17. The less we toss and
turn during the night the higher the quality of sleep we have.
A consumer survey highlighted the Tempur mattresses effectiveness at relieving
back pain:
• 86% of people with back pain say that the Tempur mattress provides
relief.
• 89% of people with neck problems agree that the Tempur mattress
relieves neck pain.
Details of these studies can be found on the Tempur website.
