Tempur has an illustrious history and has ties to some of the world most technologically advanced and prestigious organisations.

• The story of Tempur began when Fagerdala, a Swedish foam producer, took over Dan-Foam; a relatively small polyurethane manufacturer. Fagerdala was founded in 1964 by father and son Alf and Dag Landvik with a farmhouse as their first premises; in just under 20 years they had expanded to 10 factories worldwide and were well respected as manufacture of high quality technical foams.

• In the 80's Dan-Foam was striving to develop a viable manufacturing process for the Tempur foam developed by NASA ten years earlier. Because of the acquisition both Fagerdala and Dan-Foam were bound in the quest to develop this process. Through their combined expertises and tenacity they were able to develop a viable system and could begin development of an exciting new product range.

• After more than 5,000 recorded trials in 1991 the Tempur mattress and pillow were ready for launch. The original goal of simply developing the material to combat pressure sores had been expanded when the researchers noticed the mattresses had significant benefits for people suffering from rheumatic problems. Trials with Swedish back pain specialists also confirmed the mattresses usefulness in combating this problem.

• When the Tempur technology was launched in 1991 it was an instant success partially due to its effectiveness in combating a variety of ailments.

• The phenomenon swept the world with the mattresses available in 54 countries; consumers noticed the difference Temper made to their quality of sleep and back problems.

• From specialist health shops to the worlds most exclusive department stores Tempur is running the gambit of availability.

• In 1996 Dan-Foam was voted the fastest growing company in Denmark; in subsequent years it remained in the top 10 fastest growing companies.

• In 1998 Tempur received several awards from NASA in recognition of its achievements.

• Tempur World Inc was founded in 1999 in preparation for an anticipated 2003 stock market flotation.

• At the 2000 World Expo Tempur supplies 200 couches and mattresses for weary visitor to take a rest.

• 2001 the second Tempur world factory was opened in the US, creating over 250 new jobs and supplying the phenomenal growth in demand.

• TA Associates and Friedmann, Fleischer & Lowe purchase the vast majority of the interests in TEMPUR World, Inc in 2002.

• 2003 stock market flotation.

• In 2005 Tempur was appointed as the official supplier to the England Rugby team; with getting a good nights rest so important for professional athletes; who are also prone to a range of injuries and aches; Tempur was the natural choice.
