Tempur - material
Tempur material is unique in the world of mattresses, but what exactly
is it?
What is Tempur?
Originally developed for the space programme, Tempur is a visco-elastic
temperature sensitive material. It changes shape slowly under compression
moulding itself to the contours of your body. After its initial use in
the NASA space missions the material was refined and perfected over three
decades by American and Swedish scientists into the Tempur-Pedic Swedish
sleep system we know today; helping countless people alleviate the symptoms
of various aliments and get a restful, comfortable nights sleep. Tempur
mattresses have proven so beneficial that they are recommended and used
by medical professionals the world over.
The foam is very dense and has a texture and consistency quite similar
to wet clay; in fact it has a density of 85-110kg/m3, however, its open
cell structure allows air to circulate freely. One of the unique things
about Tempur is that due to its special construction it creates no counter
pressure until the load is distributed on the whole surface area. When
pressure is taken off the Tempur mattress it regains its original shape
slowly, this is why it is referred to as "memory foam".
Durability
Compared with standard mattresses the Tempur system is exceptionally durable
and far surpasses conventional designs in industry tests. Unlike ordinary
mattresses which typically feature irregular cell shapes that simply compress
under pressure, degenerating over time, Tempur is comprised of billions
of spherical shaped open cells which respond to weight and temperature,
rearranging their position to accommodate the contours of the a persons
body.
In an industry test which involved the repeated compression of mattresses
80,000 times, a highly elastic polyurethane foam mattress experienced
a thickness loss of approximately 10-15%. The Tempur mattress experienced
a thickness loss of less than 5%; compelling results to say the least.
