Origins of Tempur

The Tempur material was originally developed in the 1970's at the California Ames Research Centre. The primary purpose of the original material was to improve g-force protection and seating comfort in spacecrafts. Because of the small scale nature of the original production process, commercial applications of the material were strictly limited to narrow endeavours in the medical field.

Commercial adaptation

After years of rigorous production and material development at the Tempur Dan-Foam facility in Denmark, a large scale launch of the space foam material was finally ready in 1991.

Tempur were now in a position to offer their unique brand of unrivalled pressure relief and comfort to; homes, hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and other facilities around the world.

Tempur is uniquely the only mattress on the market today which bears the official "Certified Technology" seal of the United States Space Foundation. The only products which can display this seal are those which are certified as having originated in U.S. space development or that have been used in space flight.

Awards and recognition

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or NASA for short, has acknowledged Tempur for their application of space technology and granted them an "Award of Recognition". Tempur has also been granted a certificate of achievement from the U.S. Space foundation.

Also in 1998 Tempur technology was appointed to the NASA Hall of Fame by Administrator Daniel S. Goldin, for their achievement of exceptional commercial success. This award honours the innovative adaptation of technologies originally developed for the space programme into products that have benefited society and enhanced the quality of life for human-kind in both the commercial and medical sector. Temper-Pedic then presented the Administrator with their one-millionth pillow; which is now on display at NASA headquarters.
